As I was putting the paper towel on the roll in the kitchen this morning, I stopped to think. Is it better with the paper hanging over or with the paper hanging under? Is there a proper way? I always place the paper towels and tissue on the roll with the paper hanging over. That's the way I've always done it. There is a memory in my mind of watching Knots Landing when I was younger and remembering one of the characters on there saying the toilet paper should hang over. I don't know what the whole conversation was about, but I remember this little piece of it. So, it stands to reason that since it was said on this show, that it must be the proper way, correct? Who knows - I could have been dreaming, but the point is this is the way I've done it forever, so I don't know why I stopped and thought about it this morning and actually placed the paper towel so it hang under. My husband always replaces the roll with the paper hanging under and it has always irked me. I fuss at him and tell him to put it over, but he never listens. He just yells back at me and says he's not paying attention to which way he's hanging the paper and it doesn't matter. Ah, but it does matter. It matters to me. I'm also remembering a get-together we had at the house for a few members of hubby's track team and afterwards I noticed the bathroom tissue hanging under instead of over (I put a new roll of tissue in there myself, so I know it was hanging over before anyone else went in the bathroom). Was over incorrect? Why would someone take the time to turn my toilet paper around? Anyway, just wondered if it matters and how everyone else hangs their paper or do you not even realize how you're hanging the paper and just put it on the roll....cuz you have much bigger fish to fry......
Thanks,
Tamika

Under -- makes it a little harder for the dog to get it.
Thanks for visiting and commenting on my blog post. I can't viscerally understand exactly how you feel about the election, but that doesn't prevent me from being thrilled for you and all of us. I suspect we're in for an exciting and productive four years. It's funny -- Obama seems to be all about hope, even more than Clinton, who came from Hope.
Under is the proper way.
I would never change someone's roll in their house.
But I would tell them how wrong they are. ;-)
Yep, I have to say Under is the only way to go... my husband will occasionally put is over just to see how long it takes me to fix it... usually minutes. It never ceases to amuse him...
Funny. I stopped buying paper towels because when I thought about it too long, it just became a waste of money. I was only buying them because I grew up with them…that purchase was handed down to me until I broke the cycle. LOL. I do buy napkins though. It probably doesn’t matter to me but I hang the toilet paper over like you hang your paper towels. Perhaps hanging it under might prevent more being rolled off than necessary. Dunno?
@feefifoto: Ok so I admit I had to go to m-w.com and look up viscerally, but didn't feels so bad afterwards, since I actually got it right from the context clues...yeah me! As for the election, America definitely got it right. President Obama will face enormous obstacles. He is inheriting a glass house with gigantic holes in the roof, sides, everywhere. It is going to take a lot of time for him to get in a groove and fix things. I know he wants to make progress on day 1, but this mess wasn't created overnight and it won't get fixed overnight, but I think he will do his darnedest to deliver on his promises.
@feefitoto, angelika, joey: I ended up flipping the paper towel roll over last night. It was irking me - it just didn't look right. I guess I've done it the one way for so long, anything else just seems wrong. I'm going to put everything under for a week and see how that sits with me.
@Margaret and Natural
Over just seems right. Who sets these rules, anyway --like no white after Labor Day who came up with that and why? Although I heard somewhere or read somewhere that rule isn't followed anymore. Oops, I digress. Let me keep it moving.
Thanks so much everyone for stopping by my space and commenting.

I think paper towels are such a waste too, but I keep buying them. No one can ever accuse me of being green, but I am trying in other areas.
Thanks,
Does it matter if the paper towel is hanging under or over? What matters is there is paper towel. It boils down to what's convenient for you and your hubby. If you have a divergent opinion about the subject matter, you can talk it out and settle the matter between the two of you. No big deal. Let not the small issues in life tear you apart. There are more important aspects of life that both of you should be focused on like the welfare of your children for example. Learn to live and let live and not let the differences in you push you apart. Thanks and God bless.
Mel Avila Alarilla,
You're one of those that has much bigger fish to fry and that's okay, it doesn't matter to you. That's ALL I was expecting from this post, do you have a preference or does it not matter.
As I stated in the post, I was placing paper on the roll and I stopped to think about it and wondered if others thought about it or not....arandom thought.
I am baffled on how you came to the conclusion that this post is about marital issues. Trust that the direction of the hang is not tearing hubby and I apart and I resent your implication that while we are busy squabbling over the little things in life, our son is not being taken care of. You read one post on a blog (and took it to a place I never dreamed it could go). You do not know me. You do not know my family. Enough said.
God bless you too,
Tamika
Over, Over Over. You know how in hotels they always make that nice little "point" on the roll? You couldn't do that if it was under!
hmm this is a weird thought. interesting though I never paid attention to hanging a paper towel or a tissue. hanging over is easier to pull a piece of either a paper towel or the tissue. winks!
Ah-ha, Shelly has made an excellent point!
And I agree with you texas_sweetie, it's definitely easier over.
